The History Channel definition of Pi Day - "March 14 marks Pi Day, an annual celebration of the mathematical sign pi. Founded in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw, March 14 was selected because the numerical date (3.14) represents the first three digits of pi, and it also happens to be Albert Einstein's birthday."

As a way to encourage math and science education many teachers began the tradition of using a PIE to explain Pi to their students. A math education idea at its finest! Being that it is a circle, a pie provided a great way to show the mystery of pie: no matter how big or small the circle, the ratio is always 3.14.

And speaking of Pie, let's celebrate with a PIZZA Pie! With some forethought and planning ahead you can make your Pi Day celebration a fun event, read on for more.

Pi Day Fun Facts

  • Famed mathematician and physicist Albert Einstein was, appropriately enough, born on Pi Day in 1879.
  • Pi Day was started in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw at San Francisco's Exploratorium, where he was fondly known as the Prince of Pi.
  • Congress made Pi Day official in 2009.
  • The official Pi Day celebration time is 1:59 pm to make an appropriate 3.14159 when combined with the date.
  • If you hold a mirror to a circle, it looks like a circle. If you hold a mirror up to 3.14, it spells PIE!
