Pizza is one of the most popular foods in America. At just a glance, any person can tell that pizza is one of the nation’s most widespread and beloved foods. However, as with any type of food, there are also those who prefer their pizza topped with an unusual topping or two.
In addition to being delicious on its own, pizza is so much more than just a plate of carbs. With so many different toppings available in every corner of the country, you have no shortage of options when it comes to making your own personal combination.
Whether you’re into mustard or pesto sauce, pineapple or pepperoni — there are countless topping combinations to try!
To find out which toppings are most popular, we turned to Google Maps and Yelp for some insight. After analyzing data points from across the country, here are some of the top pizza toppings in America — as well as explanations for why they made the list.
The top pizza toppings in America may not be your favorite but they are driven by the larger populated states that are high pizza consumers based on info from Google Maps and Yelp. Keep in mind that this isn’t scientific and intended to be a small sample size…and fun.
Here we go….
Pepperoni and sausage
New York has what may be the most pizza-obsessed population in the United States. With pepperoni and sausage topping at the top of this list, it’s not surprising to see New York in the number one spot. Pepperoni and sausage are so popular in New York that New Yorkers will often order them as one large pizza rather than in half or quarter slices.
Avocado and smoked salmon
California is a hotspot for avocado lovers especially when this state is so avocado-obsessed. Smoked salmon is also a popular topping that can be found across the state. Thanks to the large number of people who move to California, it’s likely that avocado and salmon topping are more popular in urban areas than in rural areas.
Sausage, black olives, and pepperoni
Chicago is a hotbed of pizza toppings. With sausage, black olives, and pepperoni toppings, the Windy City is well-represented. This combination is perhaps the most commonly found topping across the country — which makes sense, since Chicago is one of the most populated cities in America.
Jalapeños and beef brisket
With jalapeños and beef brisket topping, Texas is another state that is well-represented. This combination is found primarily in the southern part of the state, which is home to many Hispanic residents. Jalapeños are certain to be a popular topping in the Hispanic-populated areas of Texas.
Broccoli rabe and prosciutto
New Jersey is the third-most populous state in the U.S., and it has a particularly large Italian population — which makes sense, given that broccoli rabe and prosciutto topping is at the top of the list for New Jersey. While this combination is primarily found in New Jersey, it is also popular in other parts of the United States.
Ham with pineapple and mozzarella
As one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States, it’s no surprise that pizza toppings in Florida are some of the most popular in the country. Ham and pineapple are the most commonly-found toppings in Florida. In addition to these two popular ingredients, Florida also has the most unique topping in the nation: marinated artichoke hearts.
Bacon and eggplant
Virginia is the seventh-most populous state. With bacon and eggplant topping, yes eggplant on a pizza.
And that’s the rundown on the most popular pizza toppings in America! With so many options to try, you’re sure to find a topping that suits all of your tastes and preferences. This year, when you’re craving some delicious pizza, remember that you don’t need to settle for just one type of topping.
